WHEN YOU’VE GOT a great trench on, what’s underneath isn’t so important. Did you care what Catherine Deneuve was wearing under her Burberry in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg? I sure didn’t. I was focused on the amazing coat, paired with only tights and kitten heels. Ah, l’amour!
And in every film noir I’ve ever seen, I never cared what was underneath the coat the femme fatale wore. I barely even wanted the girl to take it off, because it seemed to be the only thing one should wear while going undercover. And perhaps it is because of these old films that the trench coat will always be an object of mystique. Whenever a girl feels like being a bit obscure, a bit inscrutable, a bit enigmatic, a trench coat is a must. Must! A great pair of sunglasses adds to the effect.
A fedora may be going a bit overboard, unless you are on the lam. But hey, a wanted girl has to do what a wanted girl has to do.
